CBD and Diabetes

Does CBD Help With Diabetes?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the main cannabinoids found in hemp/cannabis. Unlike marijuana, which contains THC,

CBD has less than 0.3% THC so it does not give the user a “high” like marijuana, nor will it show up on a drug test, and is legal in all 50 states according to the 2018 Farm Bill.

CBD offers many benefits due to its reaction with receptors located throughout our bodies that control functions such as sleep, pain relief, anxiety, and the secretion of hormones.1 One of these hormones, insulin, is produced by the pancreas and is responsible for processing sugar. When your body does not produce enough insulin, your blood sugar increases, putting you at risk for diabetes, a disease suffered by 8.5% of adults worldwide.2

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is responsible for the direct impact on the hormones in our bodies, and CBD helps activate the receptors that allow it to function. Studies found data consistent with a model in which “the endocannabinoid system sets the sensitivity of the insulin response in adipocytes."3, meaning that the ECS likely plays an important role in increasing or decreasing insulin sensitivity.

CBD

So how does CBD come into play? CBD affects insulin in the same way it affects other hormones - by regulating its production through its relationship with the ECS. This may help to reduce the risk of insulin-related problems such as diabetes. Research is ongoing, but the properties of CBD may help with controlling blood sugar, treating nerve pain, or even reducing or delaying the risk of diabetes as a whole.

What Research Has Shown So Far

Because cannabis is classified as a Schedule 1 drug in many states, with many cannabinoids lumped into the same category, it is difficult for extensive research to be done, which is needed to help prove better results on CBD’s connection with diabetes, but here’s what we’ve gathered up from the current research that’s out there:

The Diabetes Council has found that CBD can reduce or delay the onset of Type 1 diabetes, stating that CBD can “save insulin-forming cells from damage so that normal glucose metabolism can occur.”4

For those with Type 2 diabetes, it has been found that CBD may help fix an imbalance in the ECS by converting white fat storage cells to brown, making weight loss easier, which is an important step in treating Type 2 diabetes. CBD may also improve glucose tolerance by decreasing insulin resistance, helping diabetics control blood sugar levels with less medication.5

One study carried out on mice showed that CBD lowered hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), lowered cholesterol, and raised insulin production. It also eased swelling and pain from nerve damage, which tends to be a problem for diabetics in their hands and feet. It was also shown in a study to lower the risk of developing diabetes in the first place.6

Pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, is a common cause of diabetes. CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects can reduce the inflammation of the pancreas, further improving the production of insulin.7

Lastly, because of CBD’s role in improving insulin sensitivity, there’s reason to believe that it may also help with gestational diabetes as well, the type of diabetes that occurs in women during pregnancy.

Early research on CBD and its support for diabetes has pointed to positive results. However, those with diabetes should still work closely with their doctors and continue their prescribed treatment regardless of adding CBD supplementation to their lifestyle.

Cautions / Why Choose Happy Stork CBD for Fertility Support

CBD is a new and exciting product category that has attracted some less than ethical companies that are only looking to turn a profit without concern to efficacy or consumer safety. With a flood of different companies rapidly entering the CBD marketplace to meet the demand for CBD products, it’s important for consumers to look closely at these companies and their products to determine if they’re offering safe and efficacious products. It can be difficult for consumers to know how to find a trustworthy source of pure, high quality CBD oil made from the right ingredients to safely take full advantage of the benefits of CBD, or to even be aware this is something to be concerned about. Recent studies have shown that many CBD companies are misleading consumers by not containing the advertised amount of CBD, or containing additives that were not disclosed. Many cheaply made or frankly dangerous products on the market are claiming to offer “pure” CBD oil at a lower cost than their ethical competitors who manufacture with high quality and safe ingredients. The low-quality, falsely advertised products are in-fact using low quality ingredients and dangerous fillers and may be entirely devoid of any CBD at all. As a consumer shopping for CBD products, especially for products you ingest, please be on the lookout and stay away from these low-quality/unsafe CBD products, especially if they are made overseas.

How Cannabidiol Affects Your Hormones

Hemp is comprised of over 60 different unique cannabinoids, naturally occurring chemical compounds that have been linked to a wide array of health benefits. Cannabidiol (CBD), the most prevalent active ingredient in hemp, is the focus of an increasing number of studies that support its therapeutic effects as an analgesic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, mood stabilizer, and antidepressant, just to name a few. As one of the major cannabinoids, CBD has a direct effect on both hormones and the body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS), a system responsible for the control of many important processes including sleep, metabolism, memory, mood and sexual/reproductive functions. The ECS plays a significant role in keeping our bodies balanced by exerting control over the endocrine system, which produces a number of vital hormones, including those relating to reproductive functions and responses to stress.
