Vitamin D’s impact on IVF outcomes and fertility

Vit D impact on fertility image of ovary with Vit d icons on top

Women going through IVF who had adequate levels of Vitamin D were nearly twice as likely to produce high-quality embryos and more likely to become pregnant than women who were deficient in Vitamin D, as discovered by researchers studying the impact of Vitamin D levels had on fertility outcomes. The study, published in Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism suggests that low levels of Vitamin D can contribute to infertility.

Concerningly, over 40% of the US population is deficient in Vitamin D. Levels of 30 ng/ml are recommended for general health, a significant portion of the country have levels much lower than sufficient.

But why does a woman’s Vitamin D level impact her fertility?

In the simplest terms, Vitamin D helps eggs grow properly. Without adequate Vitamin D, eggs don’t grow as well.

  • Immature eggs stored in our ovaries start the maturation process more than 90 days prior to ovulation
  • Developing follicular cells (eggs) have Vitamin D Receptors. This means Vitamin D can act directly on reproductive tissue
  • Adequate Vitamin D levels help support property egg maturation
  • The support of the developing eggs leads to higher quality eggs
  • Higher quality eggs lead to higher quality embryos
  • Higher quality embryos lead to higher chances of implantation and healthy embryo development

How does Vitamin D impact follicular (egg) development

  • Vitamin D promotes oocyte development (egg development) by regulating molecules involved in meiotic arrest in oocytes. What is meiotic arrest? In the simplest terms it’s the staggered development phases an egg goes through from inception to maturation. An unregulated meiotic arrest would hinder the proper development of an egg as it journeys from a primordial follicle into a ready to ovulate follicle.
  • Vitamin D enhances the development of granulosa cells by stimulating steroid hormone synthesis and cell cycle regulation. Granulosa cells are fundamental for high quality eggs. Egg development begins when these granulosa cells start to multiply. These cells help the eggs grow essentially.
  • Vitamin D exerts anti-inflammatory effects by reducing oxidative stress which mitigates negative impacts of inflammation on developing eggs. Inflammation damages developing eggs, so keeping inflammation low helps protect eggs as they go through the maturation process.

What does this mean for those trying to get pregnant?

It means that making sure your Vitamin D levels are sufficient are an important factor in your fertility. Thankfully, it’s easy to test and find out if your Vitamin D levels are optimized or if they need a boost.

If your Vitamin D levels are low, Vitamin D supplementation is inexpensive and easy to access.

A critical consideration when supplementing with Vitamin D...
Make sure it’s paired with K2

If you opt to begin taking a daily Vitamin D supplement it’s really important to take Vitamin D paired with K2, like the Happy Stork Vitamin D supplement.

Vitamin D plays a critical role in your body's absorption of calcium, controlling how much you absorb and maintain. K2 helps your body direct calcium to where it needs to go, the bones and teeth. The K2 helps prevent excess calcium from depositing in the blood vessel walls.

How to know how much Vitamin D to take?

Because so many are deficient in Vitamin D, it can take a higher amount to raise Vitamin D levels to an optimized level. For those trying to conceive, research has shown that 10,000 iu, a much higher amount than most Vitamin D daily supplements contain, are more likely to have the desired impact.

Taking a daily Vitamin D supplement and retesting your levels 90 days later is the best way to monitor your levels and ensure you’re in the optimized zone.

What can prevent you from getting the benefits of your Vitamin D supplement?

How you take your supplements matters just as much as what supplements you’re taking. Unlike many supplements. Vitamin D is fat soluble. That means if you don’t take it with fat, your body won’t be able to access the nutrients of your Vitamin D supplement.

You can take your daily supplement with a meal that contains fat, or with a product like our MCT oil. You need about a tablespoon of healthy oil (like our MCT oil) or 10 grams of dietary fat with your meal to allow your body to absorb a fat-soluble supplement like Vitamin D.

Some examples of what you can with your Vitamin D supplement include:

Possibly the easiest way to pair your fat soluble vitamins with a dietary fat is to take with a tablespoon of healthy oil. For this reason we recommend a bottle of our Medium-Chain Triglyceride oil, which has additional health helping benefits.
